Cross country is running its yearly round of sectionals on October 28 at IHSA sectionals. Brian Schutz is excited for this year’s competition.
“On a daily basis, they work on training at different paces and for different energy systems, so that they can be ready for what the race throws at them,” Schutz said. “The guys practice 5 days a week to prepare for the meet on Saturday or Tuesday. They practice for weeks starting in June so that they can be fast at one meet in October.”
The cross country team practices a lot and puts their best effort into their races. They practice almost everyday in the week to get ready for these meets.
“They are great. I’ve always said that the only thing a running coach can ask is that they run faster than they ever have in their lives. And the guys on the team consistently do that,” Schutz said. “Illinois is one of the most competitive states in the country for distance running. If you look at times around the country you’ll see guys from Illinois making up many of those top spots.”
Even though running is one of the hardest and most competitive sports in Illinois, these boys still try their best and give it their all.
“Some people think runners are born. I will tell you that they are made,” Schutz said.
