“Win on three! One, two, three, WIN!”
The Argo varsity boys’ soccer team said in their huddle before taking on the Reavis rams in the local conference championship game on Monday, October 14.
The atmosphere was electric, and the fans were cheering on full blast. The team was ready to take on their competition. The whistle was blown and off they went. The first half was rough for the argonauts with two difficult goals conceded.
“The first 70 minutes, I was emotionally not there,” Abraham Horta, one of the team’s star strikers, said.
With the first half being 0-2, the Argo varsity boys’ soccer team desperately needed a boost in their momentum, otherwise they would lose the local conference championship.
The last ten minutes of the second half of the game were intense and looked bright for the argonauts. Gaining much delight from the crowd, Peter Chmiel scored the first goal against Reavis. This gave the players hope and the push they needed to cover the score difference.
“Once we got the first goal, Peter’s goal, I think that really shifted our momentum, our focus, and I think that really changed the momentum of the game and I knew we had to go, we had to be [motivated] to [win],” Abraham Horta remarked.
Left with seven minutes and forty-three seconds, Abraham scores the equalizer. Thanks to his stellar goal, Argo had a chance again.
Throughout the game, varsity goalie, Xavier Brant, saved multiple shots—preventing the rams from gaining any more goals.
Down to seven minutes and twenty-nine seconds left, Abraham scored another goal, winning the game with a reassuring score of 3-2.
Krystof Cicha, who plays as a center attack and midfielder, reflected on the astonishing game.
“I learned to never give up… We were down to zero getting outplayed and outworked,” said Cicha. “We weren’t winning any balls. But then, the second half we came out stronger, better—went three to two. It’s a life lesson to never give up, to keep on working.”
