“It’s a big commitment, but it’s worthwhile,” said Jeremy Daughtery, co-sponsor of Argo’s National Honor Society. Daughtery has been a part of National Honor Society for almost eight years and says that the most important thing to do in NHS is to be an honorable person.
Starting in January, students’ data is turned in to be reviewed for acceptance. There are many important factors that determine acceptance into National Honor Society.
An important thing to do in NHS is ensure you have completed volunteer hours. Juniors must complete 60 hours, and seniors must complete 90 hours.
“But it has to be a volunteer situation. You can’t be paid for doing it,” said Daugherty.
During the process of applying to National Honor Society, students must receive evaluations from five different people; three of them being from Argo teachers, and two from people outside of an Argo classroom who have seen the student in a leadership role.
National Honor Society also values academic responsibility.
“You also have to have a certain GPA in order to be qualified to join,” Daugherty said.
An important factor in determining acceptance into National Honor Society is having at least a 3.5 weighted GPA.
National Honor Society meets every other Thursday, both before school and after school. Students are not required to attend both meetings.
“That’s so if people are busy in the morning, they can come in the afternoon, [and] if they’re busy in the afternoon, they can come in the morning,” Daugherty said.
When coming up with project ideas, National Honor Society is open to suggestions made by students.
“The kids just select an organization that they want to do, and we try to stick to either government organizations or 501C3 corporations, which are nonprofit organizations,” Daugherty said.
Some National Honor Society projects have existed for decades.
“Some other things that we do have just been handed down by tradition,” Daugherty said.
Every spring, National Honor Society organizes the teacher appreciation breakfast.
“We try to do what we can for the community,” Daugherty said.
National Honor Society has a big impact on our school and community, making both food and money donations to important causes.
“We would love to have more people actually—complete the process to be admitted into NHS,” Daugherty said.
National Honor Society looks great on high school transcripts and is an efficient way to help Argo and the community.
