“Malcolm and Marie,” an upcoming black-and-white drama, was shot last summer, making it the first to be filmed entirely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Set to debut on Netflix February 5th, the film has already garnered much attention since the trailer was released January 8th.

Zendaya and John David Washington star in the drama which follows a filmmaker and his girlfriend as they discuss their past relationships following a movie premiere. Sam Levinston, best known as the creator of the HBO drama series “Euphoria,” directed “Malcolm and Marie” in Carmel, California.

Zendaya also stars in “Euphoria,” the series that landed her an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, making her the first black woman to earn the award. John David Washington has a prosperous career of his own, having been nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in Spike Lee’s “BlackkKlansman.”

Critics right away addressed the age difference between Zendaya, 24, and Washington, 36. Regarding the concern, Washington responded in an interview with Variety, “She has far more experience than I do in the industry. I’ve only been in it for seven years. She’s been in it longer, so I’m learning from her. I’m the rookie. I was leaning on her for a lot. . .What I’m really excited for people to see when the film is released – they’re going to see how mature she is in this role.”
