The 100 will Meet Again in Early 2018

“Life should be about more than just surviving,” according to the CW’s The 100. This American drama is set in 2149, 100 years after a nuclear fallout. The last surviving members of humanity are living in space aboard an international spaceship called “The Ark.” After living 97 years on The Ark, resources and air supply are starting to run low. In an effort to save air, and all of humanity, the council aboard The Ark sends 100 delinquent teenagers down from space to see if Earth is survivable.

On the ground, The 100 meet survivors of the nuclear fallout, a group of people who have come to be known as “Grounders.” The Grounders are the main antagonist throughout most of the first season.

Society among The Grounders has strong similarities to Spartan culture. They cast out the weak, and pride themselves on strength. The motto among them is “Jus Drein Jus Daun,” which when translates to “Blood Must Have Blood” in their native language, Trigedasleg. The Grounders see The 100 as a threat to their society, which makes the unsuspecting teenagers number one on the hit list.

Not everything about grounders is war though. The land is split up into 12 clans who all have an ambassador to represent them in the coalition. The coalition is much like a congress that discusses and votes on decisions with their head, The Commander, who acts much like a president.

Their lives are very primal, much like early Native American or Viking societies. The people of the clans live in huts and tents made of animal furs, sticks, mud, and other things found in nature. There is also a lot of tattoos and body art worn by The Grounders. Each clan has tattoos and body art that represent and are specific to their clan. The appearance of a grounder is much like a Viking. They wear furs and armor at all times. Hair is keep in masses of tiny, complicated braids and out of their eyes. Men also wear their hair long, either braided or pulled out of their face.

Throughout the series, the leader among the 100, Clarke Griffin, tries to make peace between the grounders and her people. It isn`t until one of the 100, Octavia Blake, falls in love with a grounder that more people become open to the idea. Relationships between the teenagers and the grounders begin to pop up more, but one relationship took the show by storm. Before long, both sides find that love can be as strong of a weapon for peace as fear has been for war, showing why “Life should be about more than just surviving.”

The fifth season of The 100 is scheduled to premiere in early 2018, giving you plenty of time to catch up on seasons 1-4, all available on Netflix now.
